Why Do Fish Have Worms, and Is It Safe to Eat Them?

lead image

As a freshwater fisherman, I’ve often encountered fish with worms, and it’s a topic that raises concerns for many anglers and consumers alike. Worms in fish are a natural occurrence, and while they might look unappetizing, they don’t necessarily mean the fish is unsafe to eat.

Why Do Fish Have Worms?

Fish can host parasites like worms due to their environment and diet. Freshwater ecosystems are home to various parasites, and fish often ingest them through smaller prey like insects or crustaceans. These parasites can live in the fish’s flesh or organs, and their presence is a normal part of the aquatic food chain.

Is It Safe to Eat Fish with Worms?

The good news is that fish with worms can still be safe to eat if handled and cooked properly. Cooking fish to an internal temperature of at least 145°F (63°C) kills parasites and makes the fish safe for consumption. Freezing fish at -4°F (-20°C) for at least seven days also eliminates parasites, which is why many commercial fisheries freeze their catch before selling it.

As a fisherman, I always recommend inspecting your catch carefully. If you notice worms, remove them during cleaning. While it might be unsettling, it’s important to remember that parasites are common in wild fish and don’t necessarily indicate poor quality.

Tips for Fishermen

  1. Inspect Your Catch: Look for visible signs of worms or other abnormalities during cleaning.
  2. Proper Cleaning: Remove the guts and thoroughly rinse the fish to reduce the risk of contamination.
  3. Cook Thoroughly: Ensure the fish is cooked to the recommended temperature to kill any parasites.
  4. Freeze When Necessary: If you plan to eat the fish raw (e.g., in sushi), freeze it first to eliminate parasites.

Expert Insight

Dr. Emily Carter, a parasitologist, explains: “Parasites in fish are a natural part of their ecosystem. With proper handling and cooking, fish with worms can be safely consumed without any health risks.”

As a freshwater fisherman, I’ve learned that worms in fish are just part of the experience. By following safe handling and cooking practices, you can enjoy your catch without worry. So, the next time you reel in a fish with worms, don’t be discouraged—just clean it well, cook it thoroughly, and savor the rewards of your hard work.
